Rajkot, Jamnagar: The Customs Department raided Rajkot, Jamnagar and Morbi yesterday after receiving complaints that foreign mobiles were being sold cheaply in Saurashtra and customs duty was being stolen. Other central agencies are also expected to join the probe.

A customs team conducted a search operation at five mobile shops in Rajkot and 14 mobile shops in Wankaner in Morbi district till late last night. About 500 foreign phones and accessories were seized during the raid. A large network of foreign expensive phones has been running for the last two-three years from Dubai to Mumbai and from there to different cities of the country. Imported goods have a high customs duty of about 5%. It is coming out that crores of duty has been stolen in this racket.

According to sources, raids were carried out on mobile traders affiliated with Mehul and Navrang mobiles. Other mobile operators have also become vigilant after a flurry of raids on mobile shops in Yagnik Road in Rajkot and Lemda Lane area in Jamnagar. Customs team has seized sales registers from mobile shops. It has come out that a big racket of customs duty evasion is going on across the country by ordering iPhones abroad.
