1.65 lakh cases pending in Gujarat High Court and 16.97 lakh cases pending in district courts

Meaning, if justice is not served on time, it is equal to not getting justice. But, timely justice in India has become difficult due to ever-increasing caseload on the courts.
In the district courts of Gujarat, including 16,97,326, in the district courts of the country, about 4,42,92,136 i.e. about 4.43 crore cases are waiting for the disposal of their parties, lawyers, relatives. Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of cases pending in district courts with more than 1.16 crore cases, followed by Maharashtra with 51.21 lakh cases and the lowest with 1225 cases in Ladakh and 1387 cases in Arunachal Pradesh. At the latest, a total of 60,34,499 cases are pending in the High Courts of the country, with over one million, 10,39,879 cases pending in the Allahabad High Court. Sikkim state has the least number of pending cases with 157 cases. Gujarat ranks 13th in the country in highest number of high court pending cases while Gujarat ranks 9th among 36 states-territories in highest number of pending cases in district courts.
Surprisingly, there are 71,205 cases pending in the High Courts of the country for more than 30 years, 2.17 lakh cases for more than 20 years and 1,11,847 cases for more than 15 years. Thus, the proportion of older cases is higher. New cases in district courts in the country are highest at 8.37 lakh (in 10 years) while 5.20 lakh cases are pending for more than 20 years.
For the disposal of these cases, it is necessary to have sufficient space of judges and fill them and equally it is necessary that lawyers, litigants, etc., should not be inclined to avoid the case. Vacancy Date According to the details given as on 17-1-22, only 52 posts of judges have been sanctioned in the Gujarat High Court and 20 posts are vacant. In this way, 341 posts are vacant out of the total 1114 posts in the country.
According to the latest status of District Courts of Gujarat dated 25-7-2023, 1582 posts of Judges have been sanctioned in which 396 posts are vacant. Thus, out of the total 25,246 sanctioned posts in the country, 19,858 posts are filled and 5388 posts are vacant.
