Road Building Department's Meli Mathravati is a multi-crore construction site worth millions

- Flour, water and wood, percentage works also in government constructions

- Criminal negligence in new building projects and maintenance works, system flop in maintenance of government quarters

Rajkot: There have been complaints by half a dozen offices of the road-building department in Rajkot that materials like flour, water and wood are being used in most of the constructions due to collusion of officials with contractors in the construction and maintenance of government buildings in different areas of the city. Although many allegations of corruption have been made against most of the officials of this office, which is responsible for the construction and maintenance of the government quarters, there is an impression that the government system is failing to take action.

In Rajkot, four deputy engineers in the office of the city department of road and building department located on Yagniak Road have been relieved of duty after the Rajkot fire incident. Many questions have been raised against the functioning of Roads and Buildings Department after the controversial issue of issuing NOC without inspecting the site of GameZone.

In addition to the Deputy Executive Engineer in the Rajkot office of the Roads and Buildings Department of the State Government, the office of the Superintendent Engineer, who is in charge of the Government Roads and Buildings Department of different districts of Saurashtra, is also functioning here. On top of which, the Chief Engineer of the Construction Department works in Gandhinagar. Also, despite the existence of an independent office in Rajkot for checking the safety of the mechanized rides of the fair held in the city, the quality of the road-building works has been under discussion for years. Sources said officials of the Roads and Buildings Department do not approve bills until their share of crores of rupees worth of work, from passing tenders for government construction to passing bills. These same government engineers are also responsible for the dilapidated condition of government quarters in different areas of the city. Although there is a great danger to the government employees living in some quarters, these quarters are not maintained, yet no action is taken against these officials who are negligent in their duty.
